Best Diabetes Treatment? Prevention

New research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that 14% of U.S. adults have diabetes… and of that percentage, 4% don't know they have the disease. An aging population factors into the number, but the rise in obesity and less active lifestyles also contribute, reports HealthDay News.

"Diabetes remains a chronic health problem in this country, affecting some 30 million people," said lead researcher Mark Eberhardt, an epidemiologist at CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. He advises people to get tested for diabetes even if they think they don't have it.

MedBen WellLiving promotes diabetes testing as a standard element of wellness exams. As the disease is linked to higher risks of heart disease and stroke, early detection can be vital to the overall well-being of the individual. Better still, yearly checkups can help prevent your plan members from developing diabetes in the first place.

For those plan members determined to be at high risk for developing diabetes, MedBen WellLiving offers individualized specialty care. Registered nurses work one-on-one with the individual to help reduce their diabetes risk through confidential counseling.

As Eberhardt notes, "Sometimes prevention is the best treatment"... and MedBen WellLiving is a valuable tool to encourage your plan members to take the proper steps toward preventing diabetes.
