Many Big Companies Find No Value In Health Risk Assessments

Half of self-insured companies don’t think health risk assessments add any value to worksite wellness programs, Employee Benefit News reports. A survey of 25 large U.S. employers with at least 3,000 employees found that while most view wellness as an effective way of reducing health care costs, 50% believe the self-assessment tool to be a waste of time and money.

Health risk assessments lack the tools to change patient behavior, observes Dr. Rajiv Kumar, founder and chief medical officer of wellness company ShapeUp, which conducted the survey. “Most employers have started paying their employees to take an HRA, but it doesn’t have a measurable impact on the outcome on an individual,” he says.

MedBen is unique from traditional worksite wellness programs in that, rather than requiring every employee to complete a health risk assessment, candidates for disease monitoring and nurse coaching are selected via an electronic claims data analysis. This method, which thoroughly reviews a plan member’s claims history, provides a higher degree of accuracy when determining which individuals may suffer from, or carry a greater risk of, a chronic condition.
